Galen Rowell
Background
Galen was born on August 23, 1940 in Oakland California. He loved the wilderness and began mountain climbing at the age of 10. He studied physics in university but dropped out and started a automotive business. In 1972 he sold his business and became a full time photographer. All though he was never formally trained in photography he continued to take photos on his climbs and adventures in the wilderness. The next year he completed a assignment from National Geographic Magazine. It was a cover story on one of his climbs in Yosemite National Park. He continued to photograph for many magazines such as Life, National Geographic and Outdoor photographer. Rowell and his wife were killed in a plane crash on August 11, 2002.
Schooling:
Galen received no formal training in any form of photography
Awards:
Galen was awarded the Ansel Adams Award For Conservation Photography.
Equipment:
Galen Used a 35mm nikon camera and lenses for their portability. He used slide film beginning with jodachrome then fuji velvia. He also created a set of graduated neutral density filters and they were sold under his name by singh ray.
Work:
He considered himself part of the photograph. He mainly took photos on his climbs and adventures. He like capture the serenity and rare beuty of nature.
I chose Galen Rowell for my project because i enjoy the look of his photos and how unique and serene they are. I find his photos interesting because of how hard he works to get the perfect photo.
